Happy New Year!
We took a little of our own advice.
Since we couldn’t arrange that Christmas in the Caribbean this year, we are enjoying some time at the Dunes Village Resort in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Dunes has an indoor water park that is perfect for this time of year, keeps the kids engaged and laughing, and keeps the parents calm with a cool drink and five different hot tubs. The rooms are comfortable and inexpensive (during the winter, anyway). The wifi is strong, and even the rain outside is not spoiling anyone’s good mood.
What about a little bite to eat with the kids?
Note the guy on stilts between the giant blender and the young lady with the parrot on her shoulder – can you guess where we are?
Myrtle Beach must have more restaurants than any city in the South. Some are closed for the season, but there’s still plenty to choose from.
We gravitate to small and local (like the places we love in Beaufort, NC). But hey, we’re in Myrtle Beach where most things are big.
What do they say? When in Rome?
There are certain larger companies and chain places that really do it right (Disney, Sandals come to mind). When we were visiting Myrtle Beach last winter we discovered a chain restaurant that was doing it right, especially for families.
The guy on stilts making a balloon parrot for Cecilia right beside the fishing yatch-shaped table – fun!
We just visited again yesterday, and had the same good experience.
Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Restaurant has become one of our favorites, and unexpectedly it is great for kids and families. They seem to cater to the kids. You can see from the photos that balloon animals and guys on stilts are the rule.
Not a big fan of the balloon animal, Becket does enjoy a Roy Rogers (which was one of the best I’ve ever stolen a sip of – and it came with 5 cherries)!
The food is great and the margaritas really are much better than I would have guessed.
On our first visit last year, the place was packed and we ended up sitting at the bar.
It turned out to be the place to be, as the bartender, whose name is Slick is one of the best south of Antonio at the Rhum Bar in Beaufort, NC. He’s a dad and he made our kids feel like they were Margaritaville royalty. He’s the reason we came back this year and we had the same great time.
When you’re in Myrtle Beach or any other place there’s a Margaritaville, give it a try – especially if you have the kids along.
And remember to:
Relax…you CAN get there from here!
